Carmen Castillo, Chairman of the Board
A native of Majorca, Spain, Carmen Castillo is the President and owner of Superior Design International, Inc., (SDI). Fluent in Spanish, English, and Italian, she founded SDI as a Florida corporation in 1992. Today, the company provides its clients with web-based vendor and supply chain management services and tools, IT and technical temporary staffing, independent contractor compliance programs, and payrolling services.
Carmen's responsibilities as President of the ISO 9001:2000-certified firm include the coordination of company operations and global marketing programs, along with growth strategies. Carmen is an experienced and highly-visible entrepreneur with an outstanding work ethic. Guided by her efforts, SDI has grown into to an international company with business operations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, China, and India.
SDI is nationally certified as a minority and women-owned business enterprise.
Sophia Brittan, President
Sophia Brittan was born in Paris, France, but grew up in Avon, Connecticut, in the same house where Kitchen Caravan is filmed. She attended Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, where she majored in regional/comparative studies of the Middle East and Latin America, with a focus on theology and women's studies. In college she was an active member of the Latin American Students Association and interned at the Assembly of Turkish American Associations. Her junior year she studied abroad in Cairo and the Dominican Republic to compliment her major. After graduating in 2005, she moved to Beirut and studied at the American University there for one semester, before attending the French Culinary Institute in New York, New York. Somma, Inc. was formed shortly after her graduation from the FCI, and Kitchen Caravan is the result. In addition to experience in the culinary arts, Sophia has also graduated from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and is a certified Holistic Health Counselor.
Emma Piper Burket, V. President and Secretary
Emma Piper Burket was born in Pennsylvania, and grew up there as well as in Oregon. She graduated from Georgetown University in 2005 with a double-major in Arabic and Classical Studies. During her college years, she worked as a peer-coordinator for a youth-literacy program in DC, interned at the Peace Corps and Silverdocs Film Festival, and independently pursued her artistic interests in Film. She spent her Junior year at the American University of Cairo, completing coursework in Ancient Egyptian/Nubian Art and Arabic Language. She spent the following summer studying Experimental Filmmaking at UCLA's school of Theater, Film, and Television.
Since graduating, Emma has pursued her love of film full-time. She has worked on numerous independent productions, including her own first feature length project, Mosaics, which was filmed in France and Greece during the summer of 2006.
Kent Brittan, Treasurer
Kent Brittan comes to Somma, Inc. with an enormous amount of experience in the international corporate world. He began working for the United Technologies Corporation in 1977, starting out in the Otis Elevators division in Caracas, Venezuela, and ended his lengthy career at the Corporate Headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut in 2006. From 1986-1996 he was Vice President of Finance for Otis Elevators at their headquarters in Farmington, CT. In 1997 he was appointed Vice President in charge of Supply Management, overseeing the $40 billion dollar company's international supply chain, a position he held until 2005. His career in a multinational corporation allowed him to become an expert in international business, and travel around the world, including living abroad in Milan, Italy and Paris, France. Since his retirement in 2006, Kent has become a student at Oxford University, as well as Treasurer of Somma, Inc.
