Film Shoot in Brooklyn

December 15, 2008

I just finished catering for a 4-day film shoot in Brooklyn! I have wanted to work on a film shoot for quite some time, and I finally had my first chance. The film is by director Gregg Conde, and is about two couples spending a few days together in Brooklyn. The men in the film are brothers, which makes for compelling drama.

It was a ton of work, because I was alone in my preparations, but I survived. I had a fun time having to come up with simple foods that were easy to eat and made everyone feel good. The first day I made penne alla vodka and a side dish of grilled chicken. Penne alla vodka is a no-fail recipe, because everyone loves it. For dessert I made pizzas with nutella and bananas. Though it is not gourmet, everyone loves nutella, and it was something that was easy to make for a large crowd.

Day two was harira, a Moroccan lamb, chickpea and lentil stew, which I served with a delicious new recipe I have been making with lots of veggies and bulgur. We will feature it in the show sometime soon, so I do not want to give too much away right now!!! Dessert was peanut butter short bread bars with blackberry jam- a recipe I got from the new Bon Appetit. The third day I made black beans and served them with brown rice, chopped up tomato, onion, cilantro, bacon and avocado. I made one of my favorite cake recipes from Nigel Slater, which is a chocolate and nut cake that is so delicious and elegant, yet simple to make. I cut it into little squares for everyone to grab.

Today was our last day, and as per request, I made our famous Salmon Noodle Casserole with kale and portabello mushrooms. It got a great review! I repeated the nutella banana pizzas with the remaining dough that I had left over. It was fun to cook for 12 people, because I got a sense of appreciation from the crowd. Since I am always developing recipes at home, I can never tell how people respond to our food. I also felt good about what I am doing. People looked so satisfied with the delicious home cooked food. More and more I feel like it is more satisfying and fun than eating out at restaurants.

Now that those intense 4 days are over, I will return to regular KC life. Tomorrow I will present a fabulous new salad recipe I have developed on the blog!
